WHEN WE’RE ALL SETTLED around a table, Stu says, “So! You got news, buddy? Something on Lindy’s earrings, maybe?”

“I got news,” Dwight replies. “I can’t stay long, just long enough to grab a quick coffee and a bun, but wanted to let you know two of the bodies have been identified.”

I go to get his coffee and cinnamon bun, and hear Stu say, “Really? Two?”

“Yeah,” Dwight confirms. “Surprising, isn’t it? Didn’t think we had a chance of identifying any of them.”

“So, who were they and were they from around here?” I ask, and put his coffee and bun in front of him.

Dwight takes an extra long time stirring his coffee, gives me an odd look, then says, “Yeah. The male is from Swift Current. Went missing in 1971. It was a big deal at the time, him being on city council. Also a prominent realtor. Turns out he was a member of the not-church group that used to meet here.”

“Really? So, the not-church guys suddenly began cooperating?”

“No, not at all. Thought they might after Major Crime paid them a visit, but all that happened was that they got their lawyer involved. That’s enough to pique everyone’s interest, so they’re looking at them harder now. But the guy in the dirt? The dentist’s name is on the missing persons report and what do you know? He still had records. So it’s a positive ID. The wife remarried but we tracked her down. She and her husband back then both attended meetings here, and he was pretty high up in the hierarchy. An Elder. Then they ran into some sort of disagreement and he quit just before he disappeared. Members looked at the not-church back then, of course, but ran out all the leads and with no body they figured the guy just split. There were rumours about a girlfriend and funds missing from the realty business. The case went cold. Anyhow, the current thinking is that he was murdered here. Probably hung. Have you noticed any rafters up in the loft there that have nooses on them?” He barks a laugh; it sounds forced and no one laughs with him. He puts a good chunk of bun in his mouth and washes it down with a long drink of coffee before continuing, “That explains why he was buried so far from the other two bodies—his murderers didn’t know the correct burial location! Ha!”

“Oh, jeez,” Red says, “ain’t you just full of jokes today.”

“By the way, would you believe cutting off that finger is part of becoming an Elder? What a fucked up not-church! Pardon my French,” he says, and gives Red a grin and a wink. I guess he thinks Red has never heard the word before but Kristy and I have. Then he looks at me and seems perplexed for a second before adding, “Sorry, Lindy.”

I’ve been told many times I should never play poker because my face always gives me away. I don’t think that’s true because I’m a pretty good liar, but Dwight saw something and concluded I was shocked or offended by his swearing.
